In 2018, Aaron Peori started a new story for NaNoWriMo, both out of frustration from not writing for a long time and because he’d had a near death experience the year before. And he succeeded, doing over twice the words needed to complete the challenge! Because he was rusty and the point was to write and not necessarily to write beautifully, it was rough in places. Once he finished, we planned to work together to rework and rewrite the early chapters and post the story at our website and elsewhere.

But that never got a chance to happen. So, after some thought – and reading 700 chapters of Naruto in preparation – I decided to do it, both because I think that this was a story that deserved to be seen, and because I wanted to fulfill that last promise. I worked and wrote with Aaron for over twenty-five years; this will be the last time. So I’ll be doing the very best I can to present this story the way I think we would have done it together.

And yes, that title might remind some of you of something. The chapter titles might, too. There’s a good reason for that, but for those of you whom it does NOT remind you of anything, you’re not missing anything in the fic itself, I promise.

Finally, the opening summary is, of course, a snippet of the lyrics of Lose Yourself, by Eminem. We had to keep our brand of trying to instantly alienate people with a musical reference, after all!
