Discharged from the air force at a young age, Chris Redfield was recruited into the S.T.A.R.S. unit by Albert Wesker shortly thereafter. This special police unit was charged with dealing with terrorist threats and increasing violence in Raccoon City, a medium-sized metropolis in the American midwest. Chris excelled due to his experience and his natural combat savvy in the field. Over time, the incidents of violence grew more and more frequent, especially in the forests around Raccoon City. When the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team was sent to investigate the disturbances, they lost contact with their fellows back at the city. Chris and the rest of Alpha Team under the direct command of Wesker himself flew in shortly thereafter to investigate.
What they found when they got there was something out of a nightmare. The reanimated remains of humans and animals, hungry for living flesh, drove off their helicopter pilot and forced the surviving members of Alpha Team to hide inside the mysterious Spencer Mansion. Inside, Chris was forced to fight his way through hordes of the shambling undead and much more dangerous creatures that had been created by the twisted genetic bioweapon experiments of the Umbrella Corporation. Chris found and rescued the last survivor of Bravo Team, the young Rebecca Chambers, and together with his teammates Jill Valentine and Barry Burton, navigated the labyrinthine house and eventually escaped with their lives. In the process they learned of the depths that Umbrella was willing to sink in its exploration of the powers and properties of the “T-Virus” and its ability to reanimate dead cells. They also learned the Albert Wesker was a mole working for Umbrella, and he had engineered the creation of S.T.A.R.S. and much of their current predicament to gather combat data on Umbrella’s bioweapons. When Wesker attempted to unleash the ultimate bioweapon against the S.T.A.R.S. team it turned on him and seemingly killed him, but he vanished in the ensuing fight. It finally took a rocket launcher to put down the inplacable behemoth. The mansion itself was destroyed shortly thereafter when the self-destruct went off, apparently taking all the creatures inside (and Wesker) with it.
Chris left the Spencer Mansion with a mission, to put and end to Umbrella. To those ends he left the Raccoon police dept and struck out on his own, figuring (correctly) that Umbrella controlled the police. His attempts to inform the public of the truth came too late, as an outbreak of the T-Virus hit the city itself only a few months later, turning most of the inhabitants into mindless zombies. Chris sees this as a personal failure and strives to bring down Umbrella and other corportations involved in bioweapon research to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again.
Despite the fact that Chris is not trained in esoteric martial arts and wouldn’t know chi if it bit him, he is really quite competent. He is skilled in the use of many types of firearms, including heavy weapons, can pilot military aircraft, is no slouch in a hand-to-hand fight and has an inborn tenacity that is hard to overcome. Chris also shows a remarkable resistance to the T-Virus itself: despite being exposed to it numerous times, he never became infected. Chris is an action movie hero, in the best tradition of Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone. He may not have any fancy training, but he is enough of a badass to just deal with things like zombies, giant spiders and undead superweapons with calm resolve.
It is also worth nothing that Chris has a younger sister, Claire.
